Prayer Shawl Ministry
Trinity’s Prayer Shawl group includes 10 people who meet 2 – 3 times a year. Even though we don’t meet often, we encourage each other to make shawls throughout the year. We welcome anyone willing to commit time and energy to complete a shawl.
Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, Peace Shawls or Mantles, the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient. The intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawl is sent on its way. Completed shawls are blessed on the 4th Sunday of the month during the Healing service.
Shawl #1 - Shawl measures approximately 19 inches by 70 inches. Use Lion Brand Homespun or any bulky yarn (#5). Size 10 knitting needle. Cast on 48 stitches. Knit every row for about 70 inches. Bind off. Fringe can be added.
Shawl #2 - Shawl measures approximately 25 by 60 inches. Use Lion Brand Homespun or any bulky yarn (#5). Cast on 63 stitches. Size 10 knitting needle. Row 1 (knit 3 purl 3) until the last 3 stitches, knit 3. Row 2 (purl 3 knit 3) until the last 3 stitches, purl 3. Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures about 60 inches. Bind off. Fringe can be added.
Shawl #3 - Easy Triangle Shaw - Use Lion Brand Homespun or any bulky yarn (#5). Knitting needle size 13. Cast on 3 stitches. Row 1 Knit. Row 2 Knit 1, yarn over, knit to end. Repeat row 2 until piece measures 35 inches from cast on edge - 143 stitches. Bind off. Cut yarn for fringe 18 inches long. Add fringe in spaces along side edges of shawl. When creating fringe with Homespun because of the texture of the yarn, the fringe will fray when cut. If you prefer a non-frayed look, you can knot the ends, or knit or crochet a fringe.
